Well, it's because I know that they can handle the extra responsibility with another job or two... and I want them to learn how to budget their money.
Some of the other students might be able to handle more jobs (and more money) in a few weeks, but not right now. I want the students that CAN handle the money to be role models for those students.
Without getting "too far ahead" is also one of the reasons I charge more rent at first for those students. Keep in mind that they will be very driven to succeed, and will probably learn to "delay gratification" by not spending money at the classroom store, and that's a very good thing in the long run.
Also, now is the time that I feel the classroom start to make a strong push upwards. It seems that the more responsibility that you give them (and trust), the more that they will want to do for you academically (and socially, too).
Each year it seems like this push starts at about Day #20 or Day #25... somewhere around there.
Now, we've got about 160 days to really step it up a notch... and it's amazing that they're all able to do it.
Can't wait to show you how.
Hope you're enjoying this "Powerful Ride" that we're on! I know I am thoroughly enjoying blogging about it each day that I teach. It's surprising not that hard to discipline yourself to do it, either.
Have a great weekend, everyone.
