I particularly don't like answering the phone anyways as it is, but the student that I hired is speaking very eloquently, is taking the message, handling the message, and I rarely have to go over and talk on the phone!
Which is precisely why I hired for this position in the first place.
However, let's look at it from the student's perspective:
They might be thinking… "Wow, what an awesome opportunity to be able to ANSWER THE PHONE … in the CLASS! How cool is that! No one ELSE gets to do THAT!!!"
Therefore, I use that thinking to my advantage… when push comes to shove.
About a week ago, this student was not doing some work that I had asked of them. Therefore, I subtly had a conversation with this student that there were other people interested in this "high profile" job, and that if the work was just too much, I could always find someone else.
Immediately, I noticed a difference in demeanor and attitude, and have had just one other situation (yesterday) that I had to give a reminder (which worked again).
Otherwise, this student might not be doing ANY work for me, because they have that capability of controlling the situation.
However, they're definitely making "the right call" by keeping their work up, and ultimately their job.
Thank goodness for… "The Phone Screener!!!!"
