We started off our day by doing our normal morning seat work, but I noticed over the past few days that some of the students weren't putting out their best work (or not finishing it altogether).
Therefore, I said, "Well, if your morning seat work is not finished, there's a chance you might not get your full amount that you're owed for doing your jobs!"
Notice the wording in the previous sentence. I used words like "there's a chance" and "might not get"... because I want to warn them first before I take a hard line stance and not give them their paycheck.
Once they all finished (and they ALL finished on time after I said that)... we talked about their "rent" on their seat that is due (next Thursday the 15th). By the way, that's the day that MY mortgage is due, so that's why I picked it instead of the 1st of the month. Again, it's easy for me to remember when to collect, because it's when I have to pay.
You could see their brains doing the Math: "Well, if my rent is $50, and I'm going to be getting $30 today, and add it to the $30 I got last payday...I'll have $10 left over. Good. I'm all set."
Keep in mind that this is me not saying a word about adding up their money... I just used words like "budget" and "not going into debt" etc. etc.
This was the day we also wrote on the calendar that we could "give" to a good cause in the classroom (pajama day, or bring a stuffed animal to class, etc.) and some of the students actually did give, which was nice to see. More on that later.
Hopefully, you can see that we're building a community, and it's nice that we're going to have a long weekend to recover a little bit.
Enjoy your time, and make it a "Powerful" weekend!!!
