"No….no…. no……. NO!"
My goodness… I hear it all of the time!
When are kids going to be taught to just..
In our classroom, I purposely leave "the rules" in the closet, away from our walls. Our walls are meant for better things, like student work… or projects… or whatever we want to put up on the walls …. together.
Try to teach your students to "BE."
"Be there for a friend in need."
"Be grateful for what you have."
"Be a great student."
If you can do this on a daily basis in your class (without even posting anything), and discussing these situations as they come up, you will notice a huge culture change.
They will want to learn.
They will take chances.
They will be respectful.
They will want to come to school … even when they're sick!
I'm not saying I'm against rules… I'm just saying to use compassion (and common sense) when setting up your "rules."
In the back of my head… I'm always thinking…
"Be firm… but fair.
What do you think? Do you like to post rules… or would you consider discussing them, especially at the beginning of the year like we do?
Leave me a comment below, and I'd love to hear from you.
