Until I went to a conference about 8 years ago.
There was a lady there that said, "If you use your teacher desk to pile papers, put all of your personal belongings, put your knick-knacks on…" and I was getting excited saying in my mind "check, check, check…", "then GET RID OF IT!" she said.
I was like… "What? Get rid of my awesome, wrap around desk that I worked so hard for?"
However, what her reasons were for doing so made sense. She said that it just takes up too much space, and you're basically telling all of the children that YOU need more space than each of them.
So my basic rule now is that I give them as much space as I give myself. Everything in the room is OURS… and I set it up accordingly.
Now, don't get me wrong...you need to teach them how to take care of all of the things that are "ours."
But that's the easy part.
The hard part is admitting that you really don't need a teacher's desk, do you?
