How I set this up is very carefully crafted out and takes a bit of time to set up (warning Disclaimer beforehand)… and ask the students if they want to take part in it.
EVERY student since I started this about 10 years ago… has joined. They are not required to join, they have a schedule to keep, they have a task to accomplish (either Summarizer, Discussion Director, Word Wizard, Artful Artist, or Connector) and they need to participate when we come together as a group… because it's work done primarily outside of school.
Now, the beautiful part of it all is that I get to be the moderator.
I wish you could see what I see.
It is simply magical to see that these students are reading books that are interesting to them (because they've filled out a ballot beforehand rating the books), they are discussing the books eloquently, they are pushing themselves to improve if someone falls behind, and they are genuinely excited about reading.
You know what they say… "Reading is FUNdamental" and that's exactly what our Book Clubs are meant to be.
