How about an EXTREME makeover?
Well, you're not alone.
Research shows that 75% of teachers are not happy with their current classroom setup.
How do I know these numbers? Well, I asked 4 people and that's what 3 of them said.
Seriously, if I had to take a guess, most teachers just feel like they need to make a change with something… anything … in their room so that they feel a little more comfortable sometimes.
Well, have I got the trick for you! It has been scientifically proven to work, and I've used it in my class for YEARS.
It allows the classroom to flow better, you can teach better, and the students can learn much more effectively.
Before I give away all my secrets… here are the "Top 10 Reasons" that your class is in need of an EXTREME makeover:
Reason #10: When your administrator comes in to observe you…. you notice that they have no place to sit. "That's not good," says Captain Obvious.
Reason #9: During the day, you notice that all of your students just keep bumping into one another. Oh, no.
Reason #8: In the morning, before you start to teach… you say to yourself: "Boy, my classroom needs an EXTREME classroom makeover. Maybe I should go read a blog that tells me what to do."
Reason #7: When your administrator comes in to observe you…. you notice that they have no place to sit. Hmmmm.
Reason #6: During free time, the students don't have enough room to build that gigantic domino maze that you've always envisioned them building and setting up.
Reason #5: Your "teacher desk" has piles and piles of papers on it… from 1998.
Reason #4: When your administrator comes in to observe you…. you notice that they have no place to sit. Double hmmmmmmm.
Reason #3: During Open House night, you have to have a system where … "When ONE person goes out… then ONE person can go in." Not good P.R.
Reason #2: While teaching, you just can't find a #2 pencil. Oh, brother...get it?
#2...??? Never mind. Bad attempt at humor.
And now …. (drumroll please)…. Here is …..the #1 Reason that your classroom needs an EXTREME makeover:
Reason #1: When your administrator comes in to observe you…. they TELL you that they have no place to sit. Oh boy. Now you really need a classroom makeover for sure!
But no worries, as I told you I have the scientifically proven way to help correct the problem.... (because I teach science, by the way...) Here it is:
Ask your students.
A huge gasp goes through the air! What did you say????
Oh no! Why would I do that? It's MY room, isn't it? I've worked so hard to get to this point... I need to be able to make decisions about my own classroom.....!!!!!
I've been doing this for years, and whenever I feel that my classroom needs a change... I just ask them what we need to do to make it more... livable.
You wouldn't believe some of the things they want to do with my things, by the way!!!
But is it REALLY yours?
You're getting it now... you ALL live there... for 180 days... and they might know something or think of something that you didn't, and it makes perfect sense.
Then, after you listen to them... trust me, it will feel a LOT better. The room will flow, the learning will increase, and everyone will be happier.
But...... what if you don't ask the students?
You could always ask your principal.
